The Art of Begging

Babuji! Ek rupaiyya; Roti ke vaste the people in the vicinity of our campus are quite familiar with a number of rag clothed human souls begging at the gates of this academic EI Dorado. Why is this place a paradise for them? No doubt thousands of career conscious youth desperately seek some miracle at their hands. This gives them an opportunity to make big business here.

However in this age of competition these beggars too have to outdo each other as to earn more money than their comrades. Begging one of the oldest professions in the world show us the dark side of struggle and strife in this world. It depend on how pathetic a figure the beggar cuts and even models his art of begging which ultimately forces the hearted souls to turn towards him and drop some coins into his katora.

In this context I would like to relate an incident about a penny pincher friend of mine whose ardent wish was to marry a beautiful girl; a beggar came to him and said teri dulhaniya madhuri jaise ho kuch paisa de de. The sally went straight to the mark and had an electric effect on my friend. He generously offered her money, which came as biggest surprise of the year to me. It shows how perceptive these beggars are and how easily they can tickle people’s vanities! But what offends me the most is the harsh language that these beggars sometimes adopt. I once a beggar 50 paisa that was apparently less then his expectation. Actually I did not have any change at that time except for that sole coin which I had reverently offered him. When he saw the coin he drew back his hand saying angrily firangiyon ka daur gaya. Undoubtedly!

With a visible rise in the standard of living, these beggar too yearn for a higher standard of living. So if they pleased for it let it be so.
